‘I went to Cortijada Los Gázquez for a week long Joya: arte + ecología group residency. There was a great atmosphere that we were moving forward in our lives. We ate around a dinner table every night home cooked food from the local market. All ages were there. We talked and made work. We were a part of sustainability in practice. Simon told us the names of the plants and bugs, and the underlying systems in the land. Bon Iver and Manu Chau drifted through the beautiful house. Maxine the dog let us pet her lots on the last day. It was an experience similar to that which we should demand as a constant within our lives, always. Thank you for having me’.

I love Martins description of being here and feeling ‘a great atmosphere that they were moving forward with their lives’. To be conscious of living sustainably is to create a future to move forward into. Thank you Martin.

Also this June, Joya: arte + ecología hosted resident artist Anne Charnock at Cortijada Los Gázquez. Anne’s first career was in foreign journalism, writing for The Guardian, New Scientist, International Herald Tribune and others, and she continues to write ‘just for fun’ for The Huffington Post for whom she writes book and exhibition reviews. Over the past six years, Anne Charnock has been heavily involved with The Ashton Hayes Going Carbon Neutral Project. Her paintings, lens-based work and text art have been exhibited widely in the UK and overseas – Stockholm, Berlin, Cologne, Helsinki, Bari and Buenos Aires. Shortly after completing her MA in Fine Art at The Manchester School of Art (MMU), she showed work at Moderna Museet in Stockholm, International 3 in Manchester and the Liverpool Biennial. At that time, she was the co-founder of Suite Studio Group in Manchester. She splits her time between Chester and London, where her studio is now located.
Anne Charnock is an artists who clearly shares creative and environmental ideologies with Joya: arte + ecología and it was a pleasure having her here at Cortijada Los Gázquez…

Earlier this month we had EcoArtTech from the US as resident artists with us at Joya: arte + ecología. As part of the residency we were pleased to announce that Joya: arte + ecología worked in collaboration with the ‘Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga’ in facilitating ECOARTTECH to present their Android App. performance’ Indeterminate Hikes+’.
This is one of Joya: arte + ecología’s short films recording the residency of ECOARTTECH at Cortijada Los Gázquez and the journey from the province of Almería behind the Sierra Nevada and down to the city of Málaga for their performance.
