Joya / Anne Harild
‘I am a Danish artist based in London. Since my graduation from The Royal College of Art in 2008 I have worked professionally as an artist, exhibiting most recently in group shows and performances at Tintype Contemporary, The Barbican exhibition halls London Nov. 2011 and The Summer Exhibition at The Royal Academy 2012. I was artist in residence at The Florence Trust in London 2009/10. Furthermore I have been making work for print and publishing, most recently a series of images for Fabrikzeitung published in Zurich 2010. I also construct and deliver creative workshops for children and young people for a number of organisations including a years work at the Tate Britain throughout 2011/12 and The Frieze Art Fair in 2009.
My work is mainly concerned with place, with the perception, interpretation and reinterpretation of space. Over the last few years my work has become increasingly site-specific often investigating a place/ a space/ an architecture and exploring how I can re-interpret this through a process where thinking and making are interrelated. I work in an experimental and inquisitive way in regards to materials and processes of making. I think through making, and the act of making is central to my practice. Ideas concerning modernism, systems and structure as well as relationships between man-made and organic, particularly exploring the duality between this and the reality we exist in, are recurrent in the work that primarily manifests itself in drawing, collage and video/animation. My collages have an often poetic, quiet and contemplative nature and come about through a process of deconstructing photographs and using the various textures to construct new versions of something remembered rather than something seen. They are often observations and quiet commentary on vernacular architecture, the relationship between the natural and the man-made environment as well as observations on construction and the built environment.

My proposal for Luz light reactions is to work mainly in animation as time-lapse/stop-motion to explore the unique area and landscape, their qualities and ultimately the effects of climate change visible here. I’m interested in using my camera to investigate surfaces moving over them slowly while uncovering their colour, form, detail, pattern and rhythm and the effects that the heat and power of the sun has had on them.
I wish to uncover the variety of materials found there. I would like to mix simple shots of explorations of material with more composed and constructed shots that explore the reactions of the sun. This would among other things be through applying water to surfaces like large spatially related drawings on the ground and walls and filming it evaporate and change colour and shape as marks appear and disappear. I’m also interested in using tall sticks or similar materials that are available in the area as a form of a sundial, I imagine a field of them like a beautiful choreographed dance of shadows moving and exploring the idea of time and the power of the sun. My various explorations done over the course of the residency would all become part of a film that investigates that place and the responses of natural materials to their changing environment. The soundtrack would be generated from recordings of naturally occurring sounds. I work in a process based manner and my work changes organically as I make it therefore I want to leave these thoughts open and broad enough to leave room to let the place form them’.

“Desde que me licencié en la Royal College of Art en 2008 he trabajado profesionalmente como artista, mostrando mi trabajo principalmente en exposiciones colectivas y performances en Tintype Contemporary, el centro Barbican de Londres en noviembre de 2011 y la Exhibición de Verano en la Royal Academy en 2012. Fui artista en residencia en la Florence Trust en Londres 2009/10. Además, he hecho trabajos que se han publicado, lo más reciente es una serie de imágenes para Fabrikzeitung publicado en Zurich 2010. Mi trabajo se centra principalmente en el lugar, en la percepción, interpretación y reinterpretación del espacio. Durante los últimos años mi trabajo se ha vuelto más site-specific, que suele implicar investigar un sitio, un espacio, una arquitectura y explorar cómo puedo reinterpretarlo a través de un proceso donde la manera de pensar y de hacer están interrelacionadas. Trabajo de una manera experimental e inquisitiva en lo que se refiere a materiales y procesos de creación. Pienso a través de la creación, y el acto de crear es un elemento central en mi trabajo. Ideas en torno al modernismo, sistemas y estructura, así como relaciones entre lo fabricado por el hombre y lo natural, particularmente explorando la dualidad entre esto y la realidad en la que vivimos, son recurrentes en mi trabajo, que principalmente consiste en dibujo, collage y vídeo/animación. Mis collages suelen tener una naturaleza poética, silenciosa y contemplativa, y surgen de un proceso de deconstrucción de fotografías en el que uso diversas texturas para construir nuevas versiones de algo recordado más que de algo visto. Suelen ser observaciones y comentarios sencillos sobre las arquitecturas locales, la relación entre el entorno natural y el fabricado por el hombre.
Mi propuesta para LUZ: light reactions es trabajar principalmente en animaciones de time lapse/stop-motion para explorar el peculiar paisaje y zona, sus cualidades y, finalmente, los efectos del cambio climático visibles aquí. Estoy interesada en usar mi cámara para investigar las superficies, moviéndome sobre ellas lentamente mientras descubro su color, forma, detalle, patrón y ritmo y los efectos que el calor y la energía del sol ha tenido en ellos.
Quiero descubrir/desvelar la variedad de materiales que se encuentran allí. Me gustaría mezclar sencillas tomas de mis exploraciones de material con tomas más compuestas y construidas que exploren las reacciones del sol. Esto lo llevaría a cabo, entre otras cosas, aplicando agua a superficies como dibujos de gran tamaño en el suelo y paredes y grabando cómo se evapora y cambia el color y la forma a medida que las marcas aparecen y desaparecen. También me interesaría utilizar palos largos o materiales similares que haya disponibles en la zona a modo de reloj de sol, imagino todo un campo con ellos como una bella danza de sombras coreografiada moviéndose y explorando la idea de tiempo y energía del sol. Las diversas exploraciones que haga durante el transcurso de la residencia se convertirían en parte de una película que en torno al lugar y las respuestas de los materiales naturales a su entorno cambiante. La banda sonora la crearía a partir de grabaciones de sonidos naturales de la zona. Trabajo siguiendo un proceso y mi trabajo cambia orgánicamente a medida que lo hago, por eso quiero dejar estos pensamientos suficientemente abiertos para dejar espacio para que el lugar los forme”.
